Years ago I fell in love with the music from Chess, and now it looks like PBS is going to air Chess in Concert on June 17, 2009. I can't wait! They will then be releasing it on CD and DVD. The cast features some amazing artists including: Josh Groban, Idina Mendez, Adam Pascal, David Bedella, Kerry Ellis, Clark Peters, and Marti Pellow as the Arbiter.

Broadway Musical Nut Recommends: Chess
Some of you who (like me) may be a child of the 80's might remember the song "One Night in Bangkok" from this musical that had radio release, but others may be familiar with others like "I Know Him So Well", "Anthem", "Pity the Child" and "Someone Else's Story".
Be sure to watch for it and check your local PBS station listings.

Interesting casting choice with Josh Groban...hmmm, I wonder how he is as an actor?
ReplyDeleteThis will be one I will definitely want to check out. I am a huge fan of the original London recording and then the American one. These songs are the soundtrack to my college days. I love it so much so I am excited to see a concert version. I think the concert arena is a great choice for this material. I saw a stage production and it was just OK. There is a lot of music in some of these songs and you really need talented actors to fill those voids like Pity the Child for example. I remember the actor not knowing what to do during the song when he wasn't actually singing. I blame the director as well. It is a tough show and in my opinion (so far) it works best as a recording. Especially songs like Bangkok. How tough is it to pull off THAT song in the show? One that people know as a rock/pop song on the radio. And, I'm sorry, Murray Head...just doesn't get any better. But Adam has got that cool rock sound so I am curious about his rendition. Thanks for letting me know! :)
Yeah, I can't wait either. It looks like it will be great. :)
